AND 207 – Music Video MoodBoard

A New Year and a new module.

For this one, we are ask to create an indent, a title sequence (using After Effects) and an animated music video, using any method we choose.

We were allowed to choose the song we wished to create our music video, however we must get the singer/bands permission to use it.

The song that I decided to go with is Kyla La Grange’s Vampire Smile. I came across the song by chance and fell in love with it. It wasn’t till after a few play throughs that I thought I could us it for my music video. One of the reasons I chose it was it didn’t have the typical set out that a song has, with verse, chorus, verse, chorus. Which for me makes it more interesting.

When I listen to this song I get the image of a dark and smokey, lounge bar underground, filled with people drinking. People dressed in suits and dresses, heavy makeup, hair down. A stage at the far end, with a solo singer on it ‘singing’ the song.

From this I decide to look at images relating to 1920/1930. As the Prohibition happened in the United States and was a nationwide constitutional ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages that remained in place from 1920 to 1933. And during this time meant the rise of Speakeasy (which is a bar or establishment that sold illegal alcohol at this time) and of crime. Listening to the song I get a dark and grudging fell from it which I think matches with the imagery I have chosen.

These images are for inspiration for the bar and outside.

Images for inspiration for the characters within the video. At this point I’m unsure if I should keep to the 1920’s style, or create imagery based on it with a modern twist. As the singer in the music video I imagined having long wavy hair.

Inspiration for the style and colours of the video. The first two images are John Tenniel’s illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I liked the use of hatching and cross hatching to create depth, shadow and texture a technique that I will try and use. The second two are cut scenes from the game Alice Madness returns. The art style cutscene were based on John Tenniel’s work but with colour and was animated as a cut out animated. The style of animation that I wanted mine to be similar with.
The last image is of a possible colour palette for the animation. Mostly dark and dreary colours and parchment paper colours with only a few bright colour to perhaps highlight certain features within the video.
